Resensi :

Screenwriters: Chen Wen Gui, Zhu Yu
Producer: Lin Zi Xin
Directors: Yuen Wo Ping, Li Han Tao
Martial arts choreographer: Yuen Chueng Yan

Synopsis :
The Flying Dagger of Swordsman Lee, once let loose, never misses its target. It is feared by those with guilty conscious but held in awe and respected by the righteous. It’s a dagger synonymous with justice and forgiveness. Li Xun-Huan, who wields the Flying Dagger, is one who values friendship and treats all his friends with utmost sincerity. He forgives anyone readily, even if they have harmed him before. He uses his Flying Dagger to save lives rather than to kill. However, his sworn-brother, Long Xiao-Yun, plans with a bunch of jealous pugilists, to frame him, to get rid of him…

Plot

Legend of Dagger Lee, aka Little Lee’s Flying Dagger, has actually two parts. The second part is in fact unnecessary but I’m happy they did make it because it introduced me to new actors/actresses I have never heard of before. The first part, in one sentence, is about the conflict between Li Xun Huan (Vincent Jiao) and his sworn brother, as well as his emotional life (love life). The second part is about a corrupted brother of the Ming Emperor who wants to be emperor. It involves Li Xun Huan, but the whole plot will take a few pages to write out fully.

Acting

All the actors/actresses in the series played out their roles very well. Vincent Jiao fits perfectly as a gentleman-like scholar. Unlike his ‘over-tried’ role in Dao Ge (Knife Song III), Vincent put on a fabulous role as Li Xun Huan. Qiao Qiang also fits her role as the gentle, kind Lin Shi Yin. Her expressions were well expressed. Jason Wu’s character, Ah Fei, suits him a lot. He can play the lively yet determined young man, and all the actors/actresses’ expressions were not ‘over-reacted’. Yu Fei Hong was superb as Yang Yan, the cold woman who had a kind heart. Fan Bing Bing also acted well as the quick-tongued Xing Er, a better role for her than Jin Suo of Princess Pearl.

Fighting

I am very picky when it comes to fighting scenes. That’s why I think most series have bad (fake) fighting scenes. Other than “Xiao Ao Jiang Hu” (XAJH), this series is one of the best martial arts series. The characters’ flying skills seemed very realistic, not relying much on special effects. Even now, some of the series are fake in their fighting, no matter how advanced our technology is. Anyway, I love the flying daggers that Li Xun Huan uses, they are so cool.

Setting/Costumes

I have heard all about bad costuming and fake sceneries, but this series doesn’t have any of that. Like XAJH, the sceneries are real and breathtaking, the costumes are pretty traditional. Some of the hairstyles are a bit weird, though. I also like the lighting of this series, not the old ones that made everything soften or yellow.

Soundtrack

Not very original since the theme song is old, from the Hong Kong version. I forgot about the end song of each episode.

Summary

Overall, it deserves the five-star rating on storyline, acting, and DEFINITELY the fighting scenes!

Sinopsis :

Pendapat Gallery Film Eden :

Episode-episode awal memang terlihat seperti jenis film komedi.

Two thumbs up!

Master Ma

Februari 20, 2010

Title :
English Title : Master Ma
Year : 1999

Cast :
Kenny Ho
Anita Lee
Yu Siu Fan
Fan Bing Bing
Norman Tsui
Cheng Pei Pei
Wong Man Hou

Review :
“Master Ma” is a series about a man, Ma Wing Ching (Kenny Ho Ka King), who tries to make it big in the gangster-runned streets of Shanghai. Supposedly, it is about the power struggles between rivalry gangs over territory, about how a man who has nothing but his ambitions and his own two fists, survive in this world. If you’re looking for a moral or point in this series, don’t expect any because the series is really about how to use brute force to accomplish your goals with a steely determination. Expect,on the other hand, a series with a lot of fight scenes coupled with a loosely written plot.

“Master” showcases quite a few stars like Kenny Ho, his girlfriend Lee Yuen Wah, Wong Man Ho, Yu Siu Fan (from “Lord of Imprisonment”), and Fon Bing Bing of “Princess Pearl” who played Zhi Mei’s maid Jin Sau. The cast reminds one of “Bodyguards”, where Kenny Ho and Wong Man Ho also worked together, though Wong Man Ho’s role in “Master” is small and does not even get to show off some moves since his character doesn’t know martial arts.

The series begins off somewhere along the line at the farm where Ma Wing Ching lives with his mother (Cheng Pui Pui of “Fong Si Yuk”) leading a peaceful life training horses. Trouble starts when the ruthless leader, Bai Lak Lai of the Bai Clan, one of the two most powerful gangs in Shanghai, wants to purshase the beloved horse of Ma Wing Ching for his daughter Bai Xiao Diep (Fon Bing Bing). Refusing, Ma finds himself and his own mother landed in jail, his farm burned down, and his horse taken–all consequences of the orders of Bai. In the process, the viewer gets to admire Ma and his mom dodge bullets while fleeing. The plot conveniently sets up for Ma to go Shanghai and haplessly gets deceived by a street rogue consecutively. The rest of the story is about how he falls for Liao Kok Chi (Yu Siu Fan), how he can’t have her, and how he fights for a name and his own clan for her. Ma becomes the icon of righteousness, someone who fights for the poor. His nature is written up as very trusting and falls under the deception of Duen Leng Chow (Lee Yuen Wah) most of the series.

What was really irritating about the series was how the characters kept preaching how complex and dangerous a place Shanghai is. It distastfully reminds one of a wanna-be of TVB’s “The Bund”. There are some redeeming factors though; for instance, the sets and props of “Master” are very beautiful and pleasant to the eye. This is definitely one of the areas where Taiwanese films are superior to ones made by TVB. Fight scenes are also done pretty well, aside from the first or two episodes.

Genre: Historical

Synopsis

“Magnitude is about to start.”

You are about to go back to the time of Goguryeo, a time which was bigger than now.
‘A time when our nation was the most beautiful’, ‘A time when our nation was the center of the world’. Have you ever met such a time?! dares to journey into a time no one has ever gone back to. The most surprising time in history has come back 2000 years later, a time when the nation made China fall down to their knees and when we fought other nations without any fear.

Meet a hero bigger than the myth.
Alexander, Genghis Khan, we have the hero who overwhelmed his generation and changed history, Jumong! Up to now we have been used to dramas dealing with the history of kings and knights but now we are about to challenge in creating a drama with the birth of a true hero. A name only remembered as a myth. Get ready to meet Jumong, the hero who opened up the skies of the Old Joseon, which was once ours, by fighting thousands and thousands of armies.

Meet the love even bigger than the history.
‘Love’ seems to be the one common denominator across people of all generations and nations. ‘Love’ gets swept away with the waves of time and also gets hurt with biased views in societies, but it also creates a new kind of history by wrestling against adversity and the trials of time. True love, which is uncommonly seen in history, is re-drawn through the drama of our once forgotten history.

The Shadow of Empress Wu

Februari 6, 2010

English Title: The Shadow of Empress Wu
Release Date : 2009-01-02
Language: Mandarin
Subtitles: Simplified Chinese
Country of Origin: China
Episodes : 62
Director: Lo Qi

Cast :
Liu Xiaoqing
Eva Huang
Vincent Jiao
Ma Xiao Wei

Description :

Tender but thorny, she took the throne to become the most powerful woman ever in China!

Maybe Liu Xiaoqing was born to play Wu Zetian. The legendary Chinese actress/producer/tycoon/ex-convict portrayed the Tang Dynasty Empress in a 1995 television series, and recently reprised the role in the new CCTV production The Shadow of Empress Wu, a role tailor-made for her.
This time, the story centers on Wu’s later years of her life, from her forties (when she was still the Queen) until her death at 82. The drama attempts to vindicate the controversial Empress who has often been condemned as an ambitious woman who usurped power from her husband, the Emperor. Here, Wu’s rise to power is depicted as driven by responsibility and love. Her friendship with a Sichuan female official played by Eva Huang (Kung Fu Hustle) gives the story forward momentum.
Apart from starring, Liu doubles as art director, leaving her fingerprints all over this epic, expensive and extravagant period production. Other significant cast members include Taiwan actor Vincent Jiao, Mainland actor Yang Zi, and famous actor/director Jiang Wen, who was a former boyfriend of Liu’s, and makes a cameo appearance here.

CCTV has marked another milestone for Chinese historical television drama production with The Shadow of Em press Wu. China’s top actress Liu Xiaoqing makes a triumphant return as Wu Zetian, the very role that cemented her superstardom years earlier. Based on historical accounts, while also referencing colorful folklore, this spectacular series gives the definitive portrayal of the life and legend of the controversial figure, from her intimate love affairs to the bitter struggles she went through that sealed her rise to absolute power. At the center of the story is the touching friendship between the Empress and a civilian – a female scholar played by Eva Huang Shengyi (Kung Fu Hustle). Besides an all-star cast, the epic drama also boasts lavish sets and costumes re-creating the splendor of ancient Chinese civilization at the peak of the Tang Dynasty.
