Title: 极速青春 / Ji Su Qing Chun

Synopsis :
This is a young love story that combines romance, determination and adventure to depict a group of youngsters who have ideals and ambitions. In order to pursue their ideals and love, they exhaust their emotions and nature to produce a speed and tempo that belongs to them. And within this whole process of searching, no matter how dangerous and how many setbacks there are, their inner spirit would gradually mature and have no regrets towards their youth.

A cold, arrogant, lonely son of a rich family, Bai Lin and a caretaker’s son, Yu Si, who doesn’t confine himself to the little things in life, their status, background and character are different. Yet because they both love bicycling, it has connected the two of them together.

Even though Bai Lin’s family is prosperous, yet he is extremely lacking in family warmth; his father Zhong Qiang is a businessman, hardly comes home to eat dinner, and his mother, Wen Li is like a real life baby doll, hiding in the shadow of his father. Everyday, she only knows shopping, beauty, banquets, and have no knowledge about housework whatsoever.

Instead, it was Yu Si’s mother, Li Qiu who takes care of Bai Lin and left her own son, Yu Si, to grow up on his own. Fortunately, Yu Si’s character is easy-going, independent, and he is a good cook. He takes over the responsibility of helping his mother to take care of his younger sister, Mei He and his father, Lao Zhang. Li Qiu’s family members each have their own characteristic and cuteness. They live together naturally and as if they are friends. This kind of warm atmosphere is what Bai Lin is envious of.

Everything that Bai En, Bai Lin’s brother who is 5 years older than him, does, he does it better than Bai Lin himself. Thus, Bai En becomes their father’s favorite child causing Bai Lin to feel extremely inferior since he was young. Bai En loves bicycle riding and he would often bring Bai Lin along with him to practice causing Bai Lin, who can’t obtain his parents’ love and care to feel a bit of warmth somewhat. Unexpectedly, during an accident one time, Bai En died trying to save Bai Lin. From then on, their family sank into an even colder atmosphere. Bai En’s death brought on a big shock to Wen Li, who was originally nervous and sensitive to things. However, she wasn’t willing to face reality and instead, sank into her own illusions and fantasies. Her mentality was sometimes good and sometimes bad, causing Zhong Qiang to be quite worried and bothered. Bai Lin, on the other hand, kept on blaming himself and also made up his mind to never ride a bicycle again causing Li Qiu and Yu Si to sigh that it was such a pity.

Lan Lan comes from a rich family, but she is sweet and lovely, doesn’t have any arrogance in her character at all. She would even keep a low profile and not let her classmates know that she comes from a rich family. Losing her mother at a young age, she and her father, Lan Tian, takes care of one another; their father/daughter relationship is very deep.

Under her friend, An Qi’s persuasion, Lan Lan joined the Bicycle Society and even helps in enrolling new students into the society. However, for some predestined reason, she and Bai Lin came into conflict with each other. The two of them came into contact with one another for the first time and started a whole succession of continuous misunderstandings. Yet it was because of this that caused fireworks to sparkle up between them. The thing that can’t be helped is that both their personalities are just as stubborn. Each time, it is because of their own individual persistence which causes them to bump into each other and walk pass.

Coincidentally, Lan Lan just happens to be Yu Si’s high school classmate and also the object of Yu Si’s secret crush for a long time. Meeting up once again causes Yu Si to determine to pursue Lan Lan and also request that his good buddies, Xiao Tong and Ah Ni help him out too. Xiao Tong and Ah Ni grew up together since they were young. Xiao Tong’s character is valiant like that of a tomboy, Ah Ni is wooden and shy and he is also an expert on computers. The two of them are Yu Si’s college classmate and also a group of good buddies that goes riding together. It’s just that Xiao Tong has a secret crush on Yu Si for a long time but she just hides it and doesn’t dare to declare her feelings.

Bai Lin and his classmate, Xiu Yi differs in their #1, #2 status in entering into the school through an exam. For that reason, they are called “The two scholars”. Xiu Yi lost his dependence on people and since he was young, he had to live in other people’s home. With regards to Bai Lin who grew up in a prosperous family background, he has a hard to explain feeling, plus the fact that he always seems to lose to Bai Lin with respect to schoolwork, becoming “always #2″. Bai Lin’s unrestrained revelation of his arrogance causes Xiu Yi to develop a disequilibrium in his heart. Therefore, on the surface, he seems to treat Bai Lin as a good friend, yet privately, he feels total resentment toward Bai Lin. He who fell in love with Lan Lan at first sight, swore that he would win Bai Lin on the front of love.

One bicycle competition, closed the distance between Bai Lin and Lan Lan. Their conflicts gradually subdued and they came to an understanding. Even though they both have feelings for each other, but because of their own stubbornness and persistence, it has always kept the two of them apart; and Yu Si intently gave out all of his love with no regret, causing Lan Lan to be quite moved. When Bai Lin and Yu Si, who are good buddies and yet they have a master/servant relationship, finds out that they both fell in love with the same person, what kind of reaction would they both have? The three of their relationship is already crowded enough, but then Xiu Yi and Xiao Tong also sticks their foot into it. And in order to earn money, the news about Xiu Yi being “taken care of” by an older woman, breaks out, causing things to get even more complicated.

One incident hasn’t settled down yet and another rises up. Bai Lin’s father, Zhong Qiang, because his business failed, plus the factor with the family matter, which causes him to be unable to stand this immense pressure anymore, he ran away in the company of his assistant, Yu Ming. Leaving behind a big pile of mess for Bai Lin to take over. And Wen Li, who was able to slowly but with difficulty, gained back some of her mentality, because of this incident with her husband, she closes up her mind and heart once again. How will the 19 year old Bai Lin face this tremendous change? And how will Bai Lin and Lan Lan extend their hands out to each other? And will Xiu Yi take this opportunity to bring down Bai Lin when Bai Lin is at his lowest point in life?

This group of young people with very different personalities gets their fate connected together owing to bicycles. The change in Bai Lin’s family also added the variable of complicated disputes into their relationships. Would Bai Lin and Lan Lan see their true feelings for each other through these troubled and difficult times? Yu Si’s deep love for Lan Lan is not extinguishable, so will it cause Lan Lan to have a change in heart? Xiu Yi, who is constantly stirring up trouble, what kind of impacts would he bring onto the three of them? Regardless of whether they use to be enemies or friends, within the world of bicycles, facing the challenge of the speed of wind, it allows them to once again bring forth their passion, flaming youth, to chase and seek the maximum speed.

Love Bird

Maret 29, 2010

Title : 候鳥e人
English Title : Love Bird

Description :
This is a love story that occurred in the winter…

Chinese Crested Tern, is bird that is one of a kind.

The difference in the appearance of a Chinese Crested Tern is that there is a small section of the color black at the tip of their beaks.

After the Chinese Crested Tern has been discovered in 1863, in these past 140 years, there has merely been 5 times that it has been sighted and records have been collected on them.

The last time that it was sighted was 60 years ago…

It has been said that the Chinese Crested Terns are extinct and they have been named as “legendary birds” by ecologists…

Matsu Islands, Beigan.

Every year in the summer time there would be tens of millions of crested birds that would fly to this place, search for food on the nearby lands of the island and breed and produce offsprings of the next generation.

Under the shining sun and concealed behind a big rock, Shen Yun Qing would deliberately cover up herself. Carefully pressing the button to turn on her camera, and capturing the sight of a sky full of the wings of the crested birds.

Xiao Qing’s main job is a photographer of a wedding shop, helping newly weds take pictures of their happiness and smiling faces; her leisure job outside of this main job is also a photographer. She doesn’t take pictures of people but just specializes in taking pictures of birds. Different species and different seasons of birds that fly to Taiwan. Xiao Qing would always be carrying around heavy equipments. Along with the change of the seasons and climates, starting with Matsu Islands, she would pursue the footprints of the birds all the way to Jin Shan, North Coast to search for gannets, frigate birds; to Gandau to find painted snipes, small snipes; to the South of Taiwan’s Cigu Lagoon to observe black-faced spoonbills; as far as to the furthest southern part of Ken Ding to send off the Chinese sparrow hawks as they fly off toward the blue ocean to Ba Shi Straits.

Within all the numerous birds, Xiao Qing’s favorite is the crested bird. Xiao Qing firmly believes that there will be a day when she will be able to take a picture of this Chinese crested tern within this crowd of birds that fly to Taiwan for the summer. She has always abided by her persistence because she believes that the rumors of the extinction of the “legendary bird”, in actuality, still exists.

Qi Qi believes that Xiao Qing has gone completely mad. Qi Qi is Xiao Qing’s assistant and also her best friend. She follows Xiao Qing from South to North to chase the birds. Ever since Qi Qi saved Xiao Qing onto a fisherman’s boat when she slipped and fell into the waters in Matsu Islands, she truly believes that Xiao Qing’s indulgence in the legendary bird is becoming deeper and deeper and there is no way of pulling her out.

Qi Qi feels that whether it is searching for this bird that no one has seen for 140 years or for the happiness of love, it is all impractical. Cause the reason why a legend is a legend is because it will never happen. Xiao Qing holds in her laughter and doesn’t want to explain to this e-generation girl. Actually in Xiao Qing’s heart, she deeply believes without a doubt that this legendary bird exists, that pure love without any impurities exists. There will be a day when she will encounter it.

Three year ago, Xiao Qing wrote the story of the legendary bird on a yellow silk ribbon and tied it to a tree at the Cigu Lagoon’s Black-faced Spoonbill’s Conservatory to share this knowledge with other bird lovers. This is how a girl carrying a wooden bin on her back saw this yellow silk ribbon and told Xiao Qing in a serious tone: “As long as you believe, then it will appear!” Xiao Qing sees the dazzling smile on this girl who carries a wooden box on her back and this makes her believe in her faith even more.

Would love appear before this legendary bird does? Winter is gone and Spring arrives, the only thing that could be seen are these first flock of birds that are flying back from the North…

Synopsis:
Love Bird shouldn’t just be a simple modern era story. It should be a flying journey!

It narrates a group of people… the ups and downs of their life. The search of choices and responsibilities in love. The search of the sense of belonging, the search of a partner in live.

Xiao Qing, Shao Han & Xiang Zi… The three of them are all along the same line, but because they have different personalities, so that’s why they each possess different characters in life. At the same time, they are all deeply affectionate about birds. As a result, they each become very close friends. Yet they couldn’t possibly avoid the win and lose situation in the subject of an “only” love, fighting and sacrificing the problems and issues between them.

Niao Ren and Hei Pi meet on the internet and also crosses each other in the real world. En route to Cigu Lagoon, Shao Han and Xiao Qing meet due to some slight arguments. Each didn’t know the other but Shao Han’s good friend Xiao Wang starts to like Xiao Qing at this time. When Shao Han and Xiao Qing finally meets in the real world, how would he choose between love and friendship?

Xiang Zi, whom Shao Han believes has passed away, in actuality, is still alive. The love of the past, shame and responsibility, the struggle between the new love and old love, makes Shao Han even more uncertain of what to do. He, who is so true towards love, how should he choose? Ding Ding who secretly likes Xiao Wang, Xiao Xie who secretly protects Ding Ding, how would their relationship develop?

In Love Bird, what you will see is… friendship, family relationship and love. However, the most important is that it allows us to understand that actually… we are all birds. On one hand, we fly for our hopes and our dreams and on the other hand, we would land for the appearance of true love. In the modern age when love is gradually changing, in this vague era, do you really believe that there is still love?… Do you really believe that love is the myth of happiness? If everything becomes very uncertain, then should… we… learn how to give up? How to go about believing?

Love Bird is looking forward to flying… flying together with you.

Personal Information
Lu Xiaofeng is perhaps best identified by his trademark “Four Eyebrows” (四條眉毛) to pugilists, as he sports two strands of moustache on his face which are similar to his eyebrows, making him seem as though he has four eyebrows. He is described as good-looking, making him seem very attractive to many female characters in the novel series. He is an alcoholic who enjoys drinking, as well as being a flirt who toys around with women and visits brothels frequently.
Lu Xiaofeng’s true personality and abilities are actually being hidden behind his image of a flirt and alcoholic. He is extremely intelligent and observant like a fox, although it may not seem obvious, which enables him to solve the several mysteries in the novel series. His wit and cunning has also helped to deliver him from danger, often turning the tables on his enemies unexpectedly when he is apparently on the losing end. Lu Xiaofeng also values friendship and often risks his own life to help his friends when needed.

Martial Arts
Lu Xiaofeng is best known for his “Lingxi Finger” (靈犀一指), which enables him to catch and hold enemies’ weapons between his fingers. He does not really use any particular weapon and often relies on his fingers to fight enemies, even when he is being surrounded. Lu Xiaofeng is a Qinggong expert as well, and although Gu Long did not state explicitly Lu Xiaofeng’s Qinggong capability in comparison with other characters, Lu Xiaofeng is no doubt one of the top ten Qing Gong experts in the novel series.

The Novels
The Legend of Lu Xiaofeng (陸小鳳傳奇)
The mysterious sect Qing Yi Lou (青衣樓) which surfaced in the Jianghu stirs up some bloodshed. Lu Xiaofeng’s curiosity spurs him to investigate the issue. He encounters Princess Fengdan (鳳丹公主) of the Kingdom of the Golden Bird (大金鵬國) in the Western regions, who seeks his help on behalf of her father, the King. The King is seeking vengeance on three traitors who betrayed him years ago. They are currently the wealthiest, most powerful and best pugilists in the Jianghu. Lu Xiaofeng is aware that he is unable to complete the mission alone so he enlists the help of his friends Hua Manlou and Ximen Chuixue. Lu Xiaofeng encounters all kinds of danger while dealing with the three traitors but even after they have been killed, the mystery is still not solved yet. Later, Hua Manlou and Princess Fengdan go missing, and Lu Xiaofeng discovers that the King is an imposter. On the brink of imminent danger, Lu Xiaofeng manages to reverse the situation and succeeds in solving the mystery.

The Embroidery Bandit (繡花大盜)
The Embroidery Bandit is suspected to have robbed the Zhenyuan Escort Agency 800,000 worth of gold and broken into the Pingnan Prince’s residence, having blinded the housekeeper Jiang Chongwei (江重威). The chief constable Jin Jiuling (金九鈴) is appointed to investigate the case and arrest the bandit. He seeks Lu Xiaofeng’s help to crack the mystery within eight days. After a series of adventures and enlisting the help of his friends Sikong Zhaixing, Xue Bing (薛冰) and the Serpent King (蛇王), Lu Xiaofeng creates a trap for the Bandit, who unsuspectingly reveals his true identity as Jin Jiuling. Lu Xiaofeng defeats Jin Jiuling in a fight recovers the stolen gold.

Before and After the Duel (決戰前後)
The best swordsmen in the Jianghu Ximen Chuixue and Ye Gucheng have an agreement for a duel to the death on the night of the full moon on the rooftop of the Forbidden City. News of the duel attract the attention of several pugilists who gather in the capital city to watch the duel and they wager amongst themselves on who would emerge as the victor. However, Ximen Chuixue disappears mysteriously and Ye Gucheng is wounded before the duel. Lu Xiaofeng is worried for his friends and sets off to investigate the issue. Lu Xiaofeng’s acquaintances Li Yanbei (李雁北) and Guisun Daye (龜孫大爺) are murdered and his girlfriend Ouyang Qing (歐陽情) is poisoned. Lu Xiaofeng has no clue to who the murderer is and believes that the duel is actually a mask for a sinister plot. Eventually, it is revealed that Ye Gucheng is the mastermind behind the plot to assassinate the emperor and he is stopped by Lu Xiaofeng and Ximen Chuixue. Nevertheless, the duel still proceeds as planned and Ximen Chuixue emerges victorious by slaying Ye Gucheng.

The Silver Hook Gambling House (銀鉤賭坊)
The son of the Demon Sect’s (魔教) leader is murdered and the owner of the Silver Hook Gambling House (銀鉤賭坊) Lanhuzi (藍鬍子) frames Lu Xiaofeng for it. Lanhuzi promises to help Lu Xiaofeng clear his name with the condition that Lu help him find his ex-wife Li Xia (李霞) and the Demon Sect’s sacred object Luocha Tablet (羅剎牌). Lu Xiaofeng manages to recover the Luocha Tablet but finds it to be a fake one. The real one is actually with Lanhuzi. Lan Hu Zi used Lu Xiaofeng to help him buy time and divert attention so he could seize control of the Demon Sect using the tablet. However, Lan Hu Zi is eventually killed and the Luocha Tablet returned to its original owner.

The Mountain House of Ghosts (幽靈山莊)
Lu Xiaofeng apparently molested Ximen Chuixue’s wife and incurs the wrath of Ximen. Ximen has been pursuing him and trying to kill him. To avoid Ximen Chuixue, Lu Xiaofeng seeks refuge in the sinister Mountain House of Ghosts (幽靈山莊) under the master Laodao Bazi (老刀把子) and becomes part of them. Laodao Bazi is planning an “Operation Thunder” (天雷行動) to eliminate four of his sworn enemies and obtain a notebook recording the secrets of the Jianghu, which is concealed inside the Wudang Sect leader’s hat. Lu Xiaofeng participates in the operation but eventually the operation fails and Lu Xiaofeng exposes Laodao Bazi’s evil plans. In fact, Lu Xiaofeng and Ximen Chuixue have staged the hunt-down-and-kill incident to trick Laodao Bazi so Lu Xiaofeng can infiltrate the hideout and foil Operation Thunder. Laodao Bazi is actually the Wudang Sect elder Taoist Mu.

The Phoenix Dances in the Nine Heavens (鳳舞九天)
A large amount of gold belonging to the Taiping Prince (太平王) is robbed during its delivery. 109 expert martial artists who are escorting the gold are missing as well and the incident causes much fear in the Jianghu. The Jianghu’s only hope Lu Xiaofeng is nowhere to be found when he is needed as he is roaming the land freely. Lu Xiaofeng meets Yue Yang (岳洋) and Niuroutang (牛肉湯), who turn out to be actually pugilists in disguise. This arouses his interest to investigate further. Lu Xiaofeng finds a way to get onboard the same ship as them but in the middle of the sea, a storm causes him to be shipwrecked and he is cast onto a desolate island. Later while exploring the island, Lu Xiaofeng discovers that the island is home to a group of pugilists and the missing men are held captive there by a man named Gong Jiu (宮九). Lu Xiaofeng also meets a mysterious maiden called Sha Man (沙曼), whom he falls in love with. After Lu Xiaofeng escapes from the island with Sha Man, Gong Jiu spreads the news that Lu Xiaofeng is responsible for robbing the gold. Lu Xiaofeng is forced to hide from the government and he seeks the help of his close friend Ximen Chuixue. Through a series of investigations, Lu Xiaofeng confirms that Gong Jiu is the mastermind behind the plot and he confronts Gong Jiu at the prince’s residence. During the battle, Lu Xiaofeng unleashes his legendary power “The Phoenix Dances in the Nine Heavens” and defeats Gong Jiu.

Laughter of the God of Sword (劍神一笑)
The “God of Sword” Ximen Chuixue seeks help from Lu Xiaofeng to find Liu Chengfeng (柳乘風) of the Mount Ba Sword Sect (巴山劍派). Lu Xiaofeng disguises himself and enters the town on the desert border and finds Liu, but Liu had been killed. Lu Xiaofeng then realises that the town is full of hidden lurking dangers, but he manages to trace the murder to a former imperial concubine named Gong Susu (宮素素). Lu Xiaofeng finds a hidden treasure in the desert after a series of adventures but at the same time those pugilists lurking in the town are also planning to kill him. Lu Xiaofeng is apparently killed while finding the treasure but Ximen Chuixue arrives and reveals that it was a trap set for the villains. All the villains are slain and the heroes leave together happily. For the first time ever, the cold, unfeeling and unsmiling “God of Sword” laughs at the end of the novel.

Plot :
On December 1, 2009, a press conference was held for the film, along with Chan’s announcement of a new teaser trailer posted on the film’s official Sina website. Twitch also released a plot synopsis of the film:[4]
“ It was the darkest of times in China, when ruthless warlords waged battles to satiate their endless aggression. Millions of lives perished, and those who survived had only two choices – kill or be killed.

The battalions of warring states Liang and Wei collided in a bloodbath that lasted from dawn until dusk. Only two men were left standing – a foot soldier from Liang and the rival General from Wei. The Soldier survived because he is an expert in playing dead, with a device strapped on his body which protruded like an arrowhead for added realism.

The Soldier captured the wounded General, hoping to use the enemy as his ticket to freedom – by handing the General to the Liang warlord, the Soldier could be honorably discharged and return home to his peaceful life. The young General, though taken captive, was condescending towards the Soldier. The two men were often at loggerheads during the long and winding journey.

Review
This TVB series, although lacking in historical detail, will echo with those familiar with the period depicted and the political atmosphere of the day. It is best watched after the viewer has seen a proper historical drama. The story starts out with the audience getting a glimpse of Louis’s bravery and great skills and tactics in controlling an awkward situation. At the same time, the viewer is introduced into Louis’s complicated love life, between Sonija and the other guy that Sonija is about to wed. Louis stupidly agrees to participate in an experiment conducted by a crazy physicist- to travel back in time to take a picture of the King of Qin during his coronation ceremony. In return he will get to use this time machine to go back in time and propose to his girlfriend before it was too late. The time machine takes him back too far to a time before the king was crowned so he ventures onto an unexpected journey. The humour in the series is mainly concentrated at the beginning, based on the “fish out of water” cultural clash theme. The show became more dramatic and less funny as it continued, with Louis’s character, Siu Long becoming embroiled in various political intrigues as he fought to have the “rightful” King of Qin installed, so that history would occur as it should and he could return to the present.

Description :
Conflicts in national feuds and the philosophy of martial arts between two big families, one from China and on from Japan, forced a mixed couple to separate. Their love stirred up the bloody fighting between the Chinese and Japanese in ancient martial world. Rong Hoi Shan (starring Zhao Wen Zhuo), a Kung Fu genius, settled the disputes with his high martial arts skills. Ignite your sensations with a series of true Kung Fu fighting scenes and tell you what is the essence of Chinese martial arts.

Zhong Hua Da Zhang Fu (Fist of Hero)

Produced by China Entertainment Group and starring Zhao Wen Zhuo, Fennie Yuen, and a host of rather good unknowns.

My apologies for only being able to provide the names of two actors – I watched this series about eight months ago.

Zhao plays Rong Haishan, a young scamp growing up in Shanghai in the early twentieth century. Of course, the show’s about his quest to become a great martial arts exponent – that’s the only basis for giving this non-actor work in the first place.

The scion of the prominent Rong family, Haishan falls for a very pretty Japanese girl – Yokoyama Sakura / Yingzi, whose dad is a similarly influential figure in Japan. Their marriage has unexpectedly nasty repercussions as the private alliance stirs up nationalistic fervour in both the Sino-Japanese martial arts worlds and puts the Rong family in particular, in a very uncomfortable position. Rong Baichuan, ( Hai’s loudmouth , stick-in-the-mud of a dad ), is the acknowledged leader of the Sino faction. His rival is Lightning Blades, the fourth top exponent in Shanghai – naturally, an unscrupulous green-eyed monster who tries to discredit Rong by making a capital issue of the alliance between the two families.

On the Japanese side, Yokoyama Jubei also has an enemy, the Hell Demon, plotting his downfall. Yokoyama is played by a fantastic actor (unfortunately I don’t know his name) whose dignified performance is reason enough to tune in. Yokoyama and Rong are mutually antagonistic initially but soon form a close bond in the face of mutual danger. Their relationship is the most interesting, well-portrayed, and the only one with chemistry and is the reason that the show is better than average. There’s a very funny bit where their bonding sees them perched atop the roof, slightly inebriated and singing the theme song. It’s also the best exploration of the Sino-Japanese theme – other attempts, like Yingzi’s difficulties with her new family, only slow the pace down, besides establishing the Rongs as annoying prigs.

Haishan’s twin, Mingzhu, is the serious, dependable and capable foil to his scamp. Li Bao Feng is given her fair share of screen time, including some fight scenes. The most convincing scenes were those when Mingzhu had to take on the Chinese martial arts exponents on her father’s behalf – she really looked like she knew her stuff. On the romantic front she is saddled with some tiresome nonsense about being jinxed in love proceeding to a limp romance with her brother’s buddy, Shi Ji. The obstacle of choice involves Shi Ji saving her life and becoming disfigured in the process, pretending to die and having his identity revealed again. In the process, the writers find chances to introduce some half-assed digressions like a mystical doctor and the obstacle mentioned above. One wishes her love interest had been Yokoyama’s disciple Onizuka, initially an uptight warrior who slowly loses his self-defeating rigidity and matures into a less insular mindset. The (unknown) actor delivers a refreshingly understated performance despite his minor role. It would also have been a more interesting and thematically consistent slant than the clammy yearning of the poor boy for rich young missy angle. Heck, Mingzhu also had chemistry with Yokoyama – now that would have made for a really interesting relationship! ?

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the show degenerated towards the end. Haishan’s quest to master the mysterious and “profound” Taijiquan was unoriginal and dull. There was never any doubt that bumps like the abduction of his twin sons or his inability to guess the riddle of the skill would be flattened out by the relentless Steamroller of Logical Denouement. It’s no coincidence either that Zhao was almost exclusively centre stage when the show declined.

The Swordsman 1996

Maret 7, 2010

Title : The Swordsman
Genre : Martial Arts
Broadcast network: ATV
Broadcast period: 1997
Episodes : 40

Cast :
Damian Lau Chung Yan
Norman Tsui Siu Keung as 柳生一剑
Paul Chun
Eric Wan Tin Chiu
Kristy Yang
Erica Choi Hiu Yee

Foreword

It is a translation of 古龙’s novels – 《流星蝴蝶剑》and《浣花洗剑》. It was considered the blockbuster that ATV came up with its whole stable of artistes. It was described by China netizens as an outstanding work combining special effects and the story into one. It brought out the chivalrous nature of the swordsmen that they want. How was the result?

Story/ Introduction on characters

1. Yan Bei Fei – Lau Chung Yan
He is from the so-called evil sect but he joins the righteous pugilists to defeat Liu Sheng Yi Jian in a duel. Yi Jian’s one stroke is enough to injure him seriously but he manages to win him. What’s more 20 years later? Gu Hong’s sentimental strokes learned from his father is almost at par. Bei Fei has learned the rule of being magnanimous instead of being ruthless or too sentimental. He goes into retreat as he knows Bai Chuan’s secret. His family is wiped out within one night after that. Chung Yan barely passes the test to act as Bei Fei. He makes the fatherly role convincing.

2. Yan Bai Yun/Gu Hong – Lau Chung Yan
Gu Hong is the sole survivor of the family tragedy. Bai Chuan brings Gu Hong away after killing his family. However, he sneaks away to be brought up by Xiao Yue. He receives the order to kill Bai Chuan and later realizes that he is Mou Chou’s father. It takes him some time to figure out the sword manual that Bei Fei leaves him.

He is about to get happily married to Mo Chou when she is killed. He is seriously injured by many pugilists too but insists of burying her personally. (That scene is a tragic one as he places her into the coffin with flowers.) The mastermind is Bai Chuan’s senior. He kills Jiang Nan and Yi Jian. After doing so, he throws away his sword and wanders the plains on his own.

I am clueless how Gu Hong falls for Xiao Lian and Mo Chou. Mo Chou is very wooden – maybe because he pities her. His love with Xiao Lian is equally undesirable – too fast – he should wait for 10 years, This is so unlike his parents whose love is so ever lasting. He has too much to think of and can’t let go of everything. This is so annoying – he lacks bravery and power in every aspect.

Chung Yan is too old to act as Gu Hong. Something is wrong with the design as wrinkles can’t be hidden. Bei Fei is every inch a swordsman and is firm in decision making but Gu Hong is one who falls for others easily when they are nice to him. Tin Jiu or Chi Keung will make a better choice. His character is bad – many grumble over it. He isn’t gallant nor courageous. He is like a glutinous cake, easily formed to different shapes when pressed. He is unlike the novel’s character to have good judgment.

3. Chu Xin Ru – Chung Jing Yee
She is Bei Fei’s wife who supports him in whatever he does. Equally intelligent and highly skilled, both made a compatible and loving couple. Unfortunately, both are perished together in Bai Chuan’s ambush. ATV doesn’t know how to promote Jing Yee in their dramas after she joins them. She is often given second fiddle roles. How can they arrange her role to disappear within 4 episodes?

Many love the part of Bei Fei with Xin Ru. They are together in life and also in the same tomb in death. It is really beautiful although their union is short. Credits must be given to Jing Yee to make her performance so memorable. Hiu Yee and Kung Yu pales so much in comparison.

4. Qin Bai Chuan – Chun Pui
He sneaks into Wu Dang as a thief. He then leaves it to form his own ‘7 star sect’ since the sect leader – his senior views him as a threat. He is one of the killers for the Yan family tragedy The rise of his glory is more intriguing than the novel’s character ‘Old Man’. He has two main purposes in life. One is to kill Yi Jian so that he can wash away his humiliating defeat in the duel with him. He wants to get back his reputation.

The second is to kill the last patch of pugilistic experts. Even if Wu Dang has lost all the worthy rivals, there are still powerful ones from other sects. If he wants to be rule the pugilistic world, they must not survive. So eliminating Yi Jian and Bei Fei is a must. So Bei Fei and his wife die innocently. He is pitiful to lose his children although he finally becomes the top pugilist. That is a high price to pay.

He has a final duel with Jiang Nan and dies in his hands. Chun Pui is the best person for the role – his wits, hunger for success and also his airs are in-born. No one can do it better than him.

5. Qin Mo Chou – Choi Hiu Yee
She is like Hu Die in ‘流星蝴蝶剑’. She is abandoned by her father, Bai Chuan since young. When she grows up, she is raped by Jiang Nan. Luckily, she meets Gu Hong to have some happy moments. But unfortunately, she and her son, Chu Yang are both killed by Yi Jian. I am unmoved when she dies. Hiu Yee is too wooden in acting. What a waste to get Chung Yan to partner with her.

6. Chu Jiang Nan – Yan Chi Keung
He is once Bai Chuan’s henchmen and plans to rebel against him. He is known as the devilish saber. He truly loves Mo Chou but forces himself upon her to get her. He will kill any man who tries to get close to her. Gu Hong becomes the innocent party to drag into the dispute of him dealing with Bai Chuan. He even instigates Yi Jian to come out of retreat to deal with Gu Hong. Jiang Nan learns the bitter process skill from him and injures him later when he doesn’t guard himself against him. He relies too much on the saber. His is Qi’s illegitimate son – so his beast nature is inherited from him.

Chi Keung had fans after this drama due to his hard work. He does quite well as the villain. But ATV was so unfair to him to pass him recycled clothes that Miu Kiu Wai has worn in ‘ Justice Bao – The Sword of Vengeance’. No wonder he turned to ATv after a few years. Was it that desperate those days?

7. Xin Xiao Yue – Mak King Ting
She is the mastermind of the whole killer clan. She takes care of Gu Hong and loves him. Unfortunately, he treats her as his family and not his lover. Thus, she attempts to break him and Mo Chou up. It is sad to see her jumping off the cliff. Her whole life is bitter – to bring up so many children as killers by being a prostitute. They are close as a family but they can never stay together anymore.

She is harmed by Yi Jian and Xiao Lian to be totally paralysed. We know that in a martial arts drama, the chance of leaping to death is normally very low. She is the most pitiful person to love the whole person, Gu Hong. I am puzzled why so many women love him – because he is the lead and must be loved without any reason? She gives up hatred for love in the end. Although she is not that stunningly pretty, she also delivers a shining performance as a woman trapped by love.

8. Liu Sheng Yi Jian – Tsui Siu Keung
He is a Japanese pugilist whose only interest is to spar with others. He comes from the desert to challenge Gu Hong. His obsession for duels brings harm to others and himself. If not for Xiao Lian’s love confession that she loves Gu Hong, he will not have ended the duel as a draw. Gu Hong manages to pierce 3 strokes into his body with his sword while Yi Jian returns him a sword stroke and a palm strike.

When has Siu Keung disappoint us? He never so far – only the script disappoints us. The inconsistency in this villain’s personality make me shake my head continuously.

9. Qin Mi – Yan Tin Jiu
He is Bai Chuan’s son who has neither the wits nor courage of his father as he is equally power hungry. He isn’t afraid of Wan Qi – Wan Qi has to bring Qi out to subdue him. A pity he dies in Jiang Nan’s hands too – all because of a woman. His performance is only lukewarm then as he was still new then.

10. Xiao Lian – Yeung Kung Yu
She is trained by Yi Jian to deceive Gu Hong. She pretends to be kind but she causes Mou Chou’s death. She finds herself falling for him later. Many will hate her to make Gu Hong so unfaithful. She kills herself out of regret as she causes Yi Jian’s defeat. It is good enough that she kills Duan Mu Qi but all will shake their heads over the development. Yi Jian seems to be a respectful figure from the start to earn Gu Hong’s respect. How does it turn out to be like this?!

Many have said that she resembles Yu On On. I agree so too – but acting wise, more is to be desired. I dislike her to get ‘the weak person to be attacked and needs a lot of protection’ stigma.

11. Wan Hei Qi – Ng Yin Wah
The only man that Qi can bring out to face others among his men. How much force has he applied using his black flag? But he appears too late and is finished off too fast by Jiang Nan. Cool is the word for him! Even as a villain, he becomes a prominent figure even though his role is small.

12. Duan Mu Qi – Ko Hung
He is the leader of Fei Peng castle. He is Bai Chuan’s rival who is equally resourceful. Both are at par and refuse to admit defeat to each other. He practises a powerful skill but is unconfident to face Bai Chuan. So his two loyal henchmen become his sacrifice to test Bai Chuan’s skills. Still, he dies in Bai Chuan’s hands as he is smarter.

Favourite character
Hei Qi – he is loyal to his master and battles with his foes with his wits and skills. Others should learn from him. Unfortunately, he dies young.

Most hated character
Gu Hong – never have I hated a lead role so much. He has done nothing presentable but this has not stopped 3 women for loving him. Love is blind indeed.

Interesting facts

Another version is TCS’s “The Great Conspiracy” shot in 1993. Another movie version is by Leung Chiu Wai and Yeung Chi Keng. I don’t like the movie so much as it is untruthful to the novel and Chi Keng looks more like a man although she is in women’s clothes.

‘The China neitzens compared some parts with ‘The Great Conspiracy’〈莲花争霸〉. Bai Yu Chuan gets the lotus manual while Jiang Nan gets the Japanese secret skill to return from the death. It is strange that both evil roles get more supporters than the main role, Shen Chong or Gu Hong. Many praised both versions for adapting their parts well.

The snow scenes were shot in Japan. Although the story sucks, I must say that the fighting scenes are beautifully shot with the experts swaying their swords in the snow or on the plains with the explosive effects.

Songs
The opening theme is – afraid to let you know that I’m upset. The ending theme is《余生恨更多》- more hatred in the remaining life. The ending theme is played when Gu Hong departs, not having any aim in life after that. Both songs are very sad.

Conclusion

The snow fighting scenes are fantastic. I am attracted by the first episode. Partly because Ma Yuk Shing was Ching Siu Dong’s disciple. The swords and the swordsmen did give many the feeling that they are combined into one. The duel between Gu Hong and Jiang Nan made all of us see the shadow of the swords in bright daylight. (Some might complain to be blinded by the sparks, though.)

Although the characters are striking, the story isn’t as luring as ‘The Great Conspiracy’. There are too many sentimental scenes are redundant dialogues/parts. However, I do enjoy the rivalry between the two sects. It shows how each person cheats in order to win. The part where Jiang Nan stages a rebellion to gain success is an eye-opener. But the actresses put me off with their dressing – they look as though they are wearing kimonos. They are slim but they look plump in them. Only Ching Yee is attractive looking.

It has an attractive start but terrible ending as the pace is too slow. I don’t understand why the producer wants to make it even slower than Gu Long’s pace. 40 episodes is too much for me to bear. The China netizens are too generous to make it a drama that they are fond of. No doubt this drama is not about heroes to talk about their chivalrous nature but what is there to look forward to if ALL of them are despicable?

The focus is on the ambitious Yi Jian and about how powerful hungry each person is to have all their dreams dashed in the end. All their fates are sealed with a sad finish. Being too stubborn brings them no where. But if a swordsman turns out to be like Gu Hong who is unaffected by Xiao Lian’s suicide and tells others that he has no hatred for others, will there still be hope in the pugilistic world? But some may argue that without Gu Hong/Yi Jian’s final duel, it will be any normal mou hap drama.

I don’t enjoy this drama as it has too many illogical parts and loopholes. Still, it is worth your time if you wish to watch a decent mou hap drama. ATV had a good cast of actors who are so highly skilled in martial arts then. They are so steady in their stances. Nowadays, you hardly see this in ATV or even TVB anymore. It is a pity that most of them either deflected to TVB now or to the movie world.
